My name is Wes Jones. I live
in Wilmington, DE, where I collect tree seeds and grow them as a
hobby. While I am interested in all trees, I concentrate on trees
that live and can live in a city environment. For example, the
winter of 2002-2003 was very snowy here, and an entire block of
young goldenrain trees was killed by the salt spread on the streets.
I must confess that after 16 years living in Seattle I am a little
tired of conifers, and tend to grow mostly deciduous trees.
I started this effort a few years ago in an attempt to retree the
area around the plant where I work. This area was originally a
marsh, and has been filled in over the past 200 years with garbage,
cars, construction debris, etc. You can't dig anywhere without
hitting clay hardpan or bricks. We have planted balled trees before,
and they have not survived. I thought that if I could plant
seedlings of the types of trees that do thrive in this type of soil
they might do a little better.
